Suit tech Joe Schmitt reaches into a pocket on White’s pressure suit on launch morning in the suiting trailer at LC-16. Astronaut Office chief Alan Shepard (center) had been named to command Gemini 3 before an inner ear disorder took him off flight status in 1964.
McDivitt followed by White (shaking hands with Shepard) on launch day leave the suiting trailer to board the transfer van for the short trip to LC-19. Both wear the new G4C pressure suits, which included additional layers of insulation and micrometeoroid protection since the cabin would be opened in flight for White’s EVA. Fortune Homes Corp. of Sarasota, Florida, made the suiting trailer. Technicolor photographer Ed Thomas is at left.
